The First Step Program

Have a child born or adopted in Colorado on or after January 1, 2020? You may be eligible for a free $121 contribution to a CollegeInvest 529 account — no strings attached.

That's just the start. Once you claim your $121, CollegeInvest will match your contributions dollar-for-dollar, up to $500 per year for three years. That's a potential $1,500 in matching funds to help build your child's education savings.

How it works:

  1. Open a CollegeInvest account (if you don't have one already).
  2. Apply online at collegeinvest.org/first-step — you will need your child's account number and birth certificate state file number.
  3. If eligible, the $121 will be deposited into your account within 30 business days.
  4. CollegeInvest will automatically match your contributions up to $500/year for 3 years — totaling up to $1,500 in gift contributions.

Eligibility: The child must be born or adopted in Colorado on or after January 1, 2020 and be under age 8 at the time of application. The matching incentive is available to parents and legal guardians. Read the full program Terms & Conditions for more information.
